ILRI Kapiti Sheep

The sheep flock at the ILRI ranch in Kapiti was established in November 1997 as an experimental population comprising both pure-bred and cross-bred Dorper and Red Maasai sheep. In 2003, a selective breeding program was introduced aimed at improving the growth performance and resilience of the main breeds and their crosses under range conditions. Following droughts and loss of animals by pastoral livestock keepers in 2008-2010, the ILRI flock of 1100 sheep has become a main source of breeding animals for communities living within the surrounding rangelands both in Kenya and neighbouring countries.
